Susan Burton's DEI Presentation
Last year, a friend who is a pastor of a church in the Seattle area asked me to facilitate a series of conversations with their predominantly White, progressive church. The congregation had read some books by Ibram X. Kendi and were exploring how to more faithfully and ethically partner with community-based organizations in their community. They framework they asked me to use for the three sessions mirrored their community commitment: Transformed People, Transformed Relationships and Transformed Conditions. I am including a few slides from that series of conversations that refer to some of my comments during last week’s session. I would be happy to talk more about this work or answer any questions about this portion of the presentation.
On slide #4, the question I asked was how many of these things have you done or had done to you?
On a later slide there is a column that describes how/why these cause harm. (These lists are pulled directly from this article that we used in one of my classes in my counseling masters’ program.
I am including the article as well as a video with the article author and psychologist, Derald Wing Sue, that I just discovered and really enjoyed.)
